In the United states, more than 50% of adults who report having mental illness never seek treatment. 20% of those with mental illness also meet the criteria for substance dependence or abuse.
Reasons why those who need help don’t find it: the stigma of mental disease, lack of access to care and the financial barriers imposed by our healthcare system.
Together we can help change this.
Music can be such a wonderful tool for connecting people. The chords, notes, colors and patterns have an inherent power to express the seemingly inexpressible. Through sharing emotion in this way, music can lead to an intimate understanding that provides a starting point for new conversation.
So many of the musicians that we admire and are inspired by have struggled with their own mental health. To name but a few: Ian Curtis, Elliott Smith, Daniel Johnston, Michael Hutchence, George Gershwin, and Brian Wilson.
We are a non-profit organization with the mission of promoting mental health awareness through music to reduce stigma, promote recovery, and save lives. We shine a light on the stories and music of musicians we admire, and those whose lives and work have been effected by struggles with mental health, in order to encourage new conversations and greater understanding.
